Prof. Dr. Engr. S. M. Abdur Razzak

S. M. Abdur Razzak is a professor in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET). He earned a PhD in Electronics and Information Engineering from University of the Ryukyus, Japan in March 2010. Earlier he earned an M. Eng degree in EEE from the same university in September 2007. He earned another M.Sc. Eng and a B.Sc. Eng degree both in EEE from RUET (Formerly Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT) Rajshahi, in 1998 and 2005 respectively. Soon after completion of the B.Sc. Eng degree, he joined as a Lecturer in the same department of RUET in June 1999, as an Assistant professor in April 2003, as an Associate Professor in May 2011, and as a Professor in July 2013.

He works on ‘Modeling the flow of light through microstructure optical fibers for electro-optic device applications’. His research results have been published in various peer reviewed international journals including IEEE, SPIE, IET, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Springer, IEICE, APSJ, and optica (former OSA) journals. He has got a number of awards in recognition of his research activities and academic records. He was recognized by the United Group Paper Award in 2019, Best Paper Award from the IEEE H10 HTC in 2019 as a coauthor. One of his thesis students got the UGC Award for a paper co-authored with him in 2016 and two of his thesis students got the best paper award from the ICEEE 2015 for papers coauthored with him. In 2013, he became a Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Young Affiliate for 5 years from the Central and South Asia. In 2012, he got the prestigious Young Scientist Award from the TWAS, Trieste, Italy. He, as a coauthor of a paper, got the best paper award from the FWOCNT 2011 which was held in Harbin city of China. In 2010 he got the JSPS postdoctoral standard fellowship of Japan. In both 2010 and 2007, he got the President’s Honorary Award of the University of the Ryukyus, Japan in recognition of research activities during his Doctoral and Masters courses respectively. He was the only recipient of the IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship Award from the IEEE Region 10 in 2008 and the Marubun Foundation Award of Japan in the same year. He got the Excellent Student Award of the IEEE Fukuoka Section, Japan in 2008. In 2000 and 1996, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the then BIT Rajshahi and the Zoynal Memorial Award of the same Institute respectively.

Dr. Razzak is currently doing research on fiber optics, nano-photonics, and electromagnetic compatibility. He has successfully supervised three PhD and 12 Master’s theses. He was the Organizing Chair of the IEEE sponsored international conferences ICECTE 2019, ICEEE 2015, Technical Chair of the ICECTE 2016, ICEEE 2017 and the Organizing Secretary of the international conference ICECTE 2012. He is a reviewer of many international journals including IEEE, OSA, Elsevier Journals and editorial board member (associate editor) of the IEEE Access, and the IEEE Photonics Journal. He serves as member of technical committee of various international conferences. He serves statutory committees of various public and private universities of Bangladesh in various capacities.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), and JSPS, and a senior member of the IEEE, USA.
